Well first things first. Are they a legal business of the state they are working in? Personally, if I was booking a photographer that would be one of the first questions I would ask.
Next, I would ask if they have liability insurance and are insured. This is SUPER important - why? Because you only have one wedding day, that's why. This security will protect your photographer, as well as yourself as a client!
Now not everyone is knowledgable about cameras, much less all of the functions they are capable of. But one thing you should be aware of and educated on is the capabilities of the gear of your photographer and their comfortability with what you are wanting in your wedding day photographer.
A dual slot camera is a camera that holds 2 storage cards, commonly SD cards or CF Express cards for writing the files over. For me, I write and duplicate files on both cards in case one of the cards corrupts that I still have the other card as a backup. Things happen, and file loss is one of them and it happens all too often and can happen to anyone.
Usually the number of things does not matter, but another backup must is do they only have one camera? Or do they have other backup cameras they have just in case something were to get wirey?
Their photography style should be consistent. Ask for wedding galleries, and search their social platforms to get some insight on their wedding portfolio.
Reviews are many clients first impression, you can basically Google any business and reviews automatically pop up. DIG THROUGH THEM!!
Down to the nitty gritty questions would be do they require a contract.. the answer should be YES. (if you move forward with them take your time to review ALL of the details). Money, money. How do they accept money? Most everyone has a Venmo and CashApp these days, but most professional photographers utilize a client management system where you will have a file that contains your communication, contracts, files and invoice where you can pay safely and securely keeping up with any of your payments.
These are some of my top tips and questions to ask during your wedding photographer search, happy planning!
